January Climate Heroes: The 9th Annual Greenlight Award™ participants
Bedford 2030 held its 9th Annual Greenlight Award™ Proposal Showcase, with a record level of participation (35 High School student-led teams). The Greenlight Awards™ empower high school students to spearhead impactful environmental initiatives within their communities. The program reflects Bedford 2030’s commitment to empowering young minds, providing them with a platform to drive positive change, and fostering a deep sense of environmental stewardship. Students apply their creative solutions to real-world environmental challenges, experiencing valuable hands-on learning from the challenges and successes of their chosen strategies to reach stakeholders and community members.
At the proposal showcase, each student team pitched their idea to 3 different evaluators using an online platform. Evaluators were able to review presentations and ask questions about student goals. The diversity of ideas showcased in their projects reflects the interest in addressing pressing environmental challenges across the region. Students expressed concerns related to food and land practices, excessive consumption of resources, waste generation and poor disposal, clean energy, and environmental dangers like wildfires, flooding and toxic pollution.
Teams also offered widely varying solutions to these problems, ranging from technology-based solutions to policy-level changes, and education and awareness-building strategies to inspire behavior change.

Following the Proposal Showcase, the evaluators provided valuable feedback as well as assigned numerical feasibility scores. Teams received aggregated scores and commentary in order to guide them in refining and enhancing their proposals for the next phase of the competition. Teams used this feedback to decide whether to “greenlight” their projects to round two. Over the coming months, they will actuate their projects and present tangible outcomes at the Greenlight Award™ Finals in front of a panel of judges. We can expect to hear from over 20 teams at the Finals scheduled for April 21.
The support we would receive throughout the entire way of developing and implementing our project, connecting with stakeholders and mentors, and receiving feedback from the Bedford 2030 team truly made this experience one of a kind.
